Susan Anthony: About the Artist
I love the colors of the Cape – the always-changing blues of sky and sea as they mirror each other, the warm gold tones of a salt marsh in Autumn, or purple branches set against a winter meadow.
I’m drawn to collage as a form of artistic expression because it’s primarily about creating images using color and shape. I use cut paper from magazines and catalogs to create my collages. I’m always looking for media that contains the colors of a landscape, and if I need a large area of a particular color I may make color copies of a certain page or piece of media. I cut the paper with small scissors or an Exacto knife and use Sobo glue.
I’m always seeking out new challenges in my work. This may mean shifting composition and perspective, adding unique detail, or incorporating specific architectural elements or even figures. I try to use color to evoke a season, a certain time of day, or a particular kind of light. This exploration of place, light, and color is ongoing and organic.
While I continue to immerse myself in the places, shapes, and colors of the Outer Cape which I love so dearly – I also strive toward exploring new subject matter, including still life and images echoing the work of some of my favorite artists. This has given me the opportunity to work with new, often brighter colors (there’s not a lot of bright orange in the typical Outer Cape vista!) and to continue stretching into new directions and experimentation within my collage technique.
I participate in shows a few times a year. A selection of my work can be found, year-round, at Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet, Massachusettes and on their website.
